Parole request denied

A man convicted of fatally stabbing a Putnam County man in 1989 will have to spend at least eight more years in prison.

On Tuesday, the state Adult Parole Authority denied parole for Mark A. Gildemeister, 41, formerly of Lima. His next parole hearing will be in March 2018, according to a spokeswoman with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

He was convicted of killing Jeffrey Schumacher on Sept. 7, 1989 at Schumacher's home just outside of Vaughnsville.

Gildemeister has served 20 years of his 30-years-to-life prison sentence imposed by Putnam County Common Pleas Judge Randall Basinger for murder and aggravated burglary. He is incarcerated at the Allen Correctional Institution.

Prior to the hearing, Basinger wrote a letter to the parole board in opposition to Gildemeister's release until he has served at least 30 years.

It is Basinger's opinion that Gildemeister "poses a significant danger to society and that parole should be reluctantly considered and heavily scrutinized," the judge wrote.

Schumacher, 34, was stabbed when he came home and found Gildemeister and another man, Jack T. Quinn, burglarizing his house, according to authorities.

Schumacher chased after the burglars for a short distance. He then ran from his home to his parents' house about a half-mile away on Ohio 12, authorities said, and later died at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima.

Quinn, 42, formerly of Beaverdam, is also behind bars at the Allen Correctional Institution serving a 15- to 50-year prison sentence on charges of complicity to involuntary manslaughter and complicity to aggravated burglary, both first-degree felonies. His next parole hearing is scheduled for December 2012, according to the Ohio prison Web site.

My Opinion on Mark G.
“ I went to school with Mark G. and what I remember was a kind, gentle boy who did not seem to be violent or dangerous in any way. I think he had a bad home life. Didn't know his parents but heard they may have been into drugs or something like that. I always remember him coming to school with very old, ripped clothes. You could tell he didn't have many clothes. He wore the same clothes several times a week.
I know there is no excuse for what he did, and think he should be punished for what he did. I really think he had no intention what so ever to kill anyone. I'm thinking he probably brought the knife to scare the person and accidently stabbed him. All I know is that he didn't have much of anything while growing up as a young boy and teenager. He probably didn't think his life was going to get any better so he resorted to stealing... I really don't know. Just giving you my opinion about this. I think he has served enough time and really think he needs to be released with an ankle bracelet or something like that. Maybe to a half way house.
