33 students awarded scholarships, renewals
The Findlay-Hancock Community Foundation has announced that 33 students from Hancock County have received Floyd J. and Alice K. Curran Scholarships and Scholarship Renewals.

Students receiving $500 scholarships are:

Clay Baker, a 2010 graduate of Arcadia High School, will continue his education at the University of Akron to obtain a degree in communications. Baker is the son of Charles and Leann Baker.

Students receiving $500 renewals are:

Molly Feasel, a 2009 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends Ohio State University with a major in hospitality management. Feasel is the daughter of Michael and Rita Feasel.

Landon Fleegle, a 2009 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends Owens Community College with a major in business. Fleegle is the son of Jon and Melinda Fleegle.

Students receiving $1,000 scholarships are:

Marlayna Anderson, a 2010 graduate of Findlay High School, will continue her education at Adrian College to obtain a degree in pre-med. Anderson is the daughter of Richard and Sonja Albert.

Richard Costello, a 2010 graduate of Findlay High School, will continue his education at Indiana Wesleyan University to obtain a degree in pre-medicine. Costello is the son of Richard and Sandra Costello.

Dillon Flick, a 2010 graduate of Van Buren High School, will continue his education at Ohio Northern University to obtain a degree in civil engineering. Flick is the son of Steven and Brenda Flick.

Mallie Grim, a 2010 graduate of Arcadia High School, will continue her education at Owens Community College to obtain a degree in education. Grim is the daughter of Janet Grim.

Cayla Herod, a 2010 graduate of Arcadia High School, will continue her education at Bowling Green State University to obtain a degree in nursing. Herod is the daughter of Ronnie and Jennifer Hobbs.

Evan Hill, a 2010 graduate of Arlington High School, will continue his education at the University of Michigan to obtain a degree in chemical engineering. Hill is the son of Timothy and Cynthia Hill.

Logan Holman, a 2010 graduate of Arcadia High School, will continue her education at Xavier University to obtain a degree in business. Holman is the daughter of Dennis and Kendra Holman.

Alex Kaple, a 2010 graduate of Liberty Benton High School, will continue his education at the Ohio State University to obtain a degree in electrical engineering. Kaple is the son of Chip Kaple and Jillian Elliot.

Angelica Luna, a 2010 graduate of McComb High School, will continue his education at Owens Community College to obtain a degree in massage therapy. Luna is the daughter of Lafredo Luna and Irene Morales.

Riley Patterson, a 2010 graduate of Van Buren High School, will continue his education at Bluffton University to obtain a degree in business management. Patterson is the son of Ralph Patterson and Tammy Croy.

Paisley Scarberry, a 2010 graduate of Findlay High School, will continue her education at the University of Cincinnati. Scarberry is the daughter of Horton Scarberry and Shelly Moore.

Students receiving $1,000 renewals are:

Mackenzie Albach, a 2008 graduate of Findlay High School, attends Bowling Green State University with a major in marketing. Albach is the daughter of Robert and Marilyn Albach.

Desiree Baird, a 2008 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends the University of Toledo with a major in astronomy. Baird is daughter of Daniel and Cinda Baird.

Megan Bright, a 2009 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends the University of Findlay with a major in business management. Bright is the daughter of Rick and Ronda Bright.

Julia Colman, a 2009 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends Ohio State University with a major in nutrition/pre-dentistry. Colman is the daughter of Robert and Christie Colman.

Lindsay Fleegle, a 2008 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends Ohio Northern University with a major in pharmacy. Fleegle is the daughter of Jon and Melinda Fleegle.

Travis Glick, a 2009 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends the University of Toledo with a major in mechanical engineering. Glick is the son of Wesley and Tammy Glick.

William Kentris, a 2008 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends Ohio State University to obtain a degree in Japanese, computer science and engineering. Kentris is the son of William Kentris and Don and Lori Gonya.

Lee Kindig, a 2008 graduate of Findlay High School, is attending Xavier University to obtain a degree in philosophy, politics and the public honor's program. Kindig is the son of Jeffrey and Terry Kindig.

William Kindle, a 2009 graduate of McComb High School, is attending Bluffton University to obtain a degree in youth ministry and recreation. Kindle is the son of Richard and Sharon Kindle.

Cynthia Misamore, a 2008 graduate of Findlay High School, attends Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a major in marketing. Misamore is the daughter of Mark and Constance Misamore.

Susan Thomas, a 2008 graduate of Findlay High School, attends Boston University to obtain a degree in biochemistry. Thomas is and is the daughter of Joe and Anitha Thomas.

Jennifer Wagner, a 2009 graduate of Vanlue High School, attends Ohio State University with a major in pre-nursing. Wagner is the daughter of Charles and Ruth Wagner.

Emily Warnimont, a 2009 graduate of Findlay High School, attends the University of Findlay with a major in pre-veterinarian. Warnimont is the daughter of Rodney Warnimont and Sarah Wernert.

Students receiving $1,500 scholarships are:

Andrew Smith, a 2010 graduate of Arcadia High School, will continue his education at Wilmington College to obtain a degree in agronomy. Smith is the son of Kenneth and Brenda Smith.

Students receiving $1,500 renewals are:

Dana Huntley, a 2008 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends Bowling Green State University with a major in interior design. Huntley is the daughter of David and Brenda Huntley.

Jessica Wiler, a 2009 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends Owens Community College with a major in art. Wiler is the daughter of Timothy and Donna Wiler.

Students receiving $2,000 scholarships are:

Samantha Heaston, a 2010 graduate of Arcadia High School, will continue her education at Wittenberg University to obtain a degree in pre-law. Heaston is the daughter of Edward and Candy Heaston.

Tierney Margraf, a 2010 graduate of Arcadia High School, will continue her education at Capital University to obtain a degree in early childhood education. Margraf is the daughter of James and Teresa Margraf.

Students receiving $2,000 renewals are:

Travis Bohn, a 2009 graduate of Arcadia High School, attends the University of Findlay with a major in hospitality management. Bohn is the son of David Bohn and Lisa Moses.

The scholarship, established by Floyd and Alice Curran, is for high school graduates from a state-chartered school or private school located in Hancock County and is renewable for two additional years. Special consideration is given to students from Arcadia High School.

News Briefs Firefighters discover 20 marijuana plants in house
After fighting a house fire early Monday at 815 Howard St., firefighters found 20 marijuana plants in the residence.

"They ran across it and called us," said police Sgt. Justin Hendren with the Hancock County METRICH Drug Enforcement Unit.

Police seized all 20 plants, and Hendren said charges are pending.

High-powered growing lights, fans, and a box filled with dried marijuana were also found in the house, according to a police report.

Investigators said an electrical short started the fire before 3 a.m. Monday.

The blaze caused an estimated $12,000 in damage to the residence, owned by Amanda Crawford. No one was injured, according to the Findlay Fire Department.


Carey announces holiday closing
CAREY -- Carey offices, including administrative, income tax and utilities, electric, wastewater treatment plant, and public works, will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

The curbside recycling program will be held Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 7-9.


Findlay trooper named sergeant
Trooper Jacob L. Fletcher, assigned to the Findlay post of the State Highway Patrol, was promoted to sergeant Wednesday by Patrol Superintendent Col. David Dicken.

With the promotion, Fletcher will stay at the Findlay post and serve as an assistant post commander, according to the patrol.

Fletcher began his patrol career in 2002 after graduating from the 139th Academy class and has been assigned to the Findlay post since.


Owens announces holiday schedule
The Toledo and Findlay campuses of Owens Community College will be closed Saturday through Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

There will be no classes and the college offices will be closed.

Classes will resume and offices will open again on Tuesday.


Holiday changes ad deadlines
The Courier won't be published on Monday, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Because of the holiday, some advertising deadlines have been moved up this week:

Black and white display advertising for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by noon Friday. Display advertising for Wednesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Color display advertising for the Thursday, Sept. 9 newspaper must be placed by Friday.

Classified advertising and City and Country advertising for Saturday's newspaper must be placed by 2 p.m. Friday. Classified ads for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Courier business and advertising offices will close at 3 p.m. Friday for the holiday.
