Dog license, kennel fees increased

The Hancock County commissioners on Thursday approved an increase in dog license and kennel fees.

The new rates will take effect Dec. 1, according to County Assistant Prosecutor Cindy Land.

The dog license fee will increase from $15 to $20, and the kennel license fee from $75 to $100.

The Ohio Revised Code states that individual dog tag fees must be equal to 20 percent of the kennel fee cost.

The Hancock County Humane Society asked the commissioners to raise the fees to help fund the addition of a second full-time dog warden, as well as the agency's rising cost of operations.

Paula Krugh, director of the Humane Society, has said Hancock County Dog Warden Dana Berger received 1,393 animal control calls in 2009, up from 1,269 in 2008.

As of July 16, Berger had received 595 calls so far this year and had picked up 126 dogs.

"There are so many more calls for one person to be able to handle, and we feel the county has the need, because of the increased activity, to have two officers on the road at all times," Krugh has said.

The Humane Society has a second part-time dog warden who also serves as a part-time dispatcher.

The agency already owns two dog warden trucks.

With the additional income from the fee increases, the Humane Society will increase the part-time dog warden position to full-time, and will likely hire a new part-time dispatcher.

Licensing fees going up
“ I think that it would be a great idea to enforce that cats also be licensed. There are states that do this including Canada, and they charge you like 250.00 per pet if they are not licensed. It would help with the budgeting that is needed.

I think the fees should be high for those who dont get their pets licensed, and doubled there after.

The license helps identify the pet if they get lost, or injured. I have heard alot of people saying that they refuse to license their pets at all. They also dont keep their immunizations up or dont get them at all. This is all part of being a responsible pet owner, dont you think?

And then, these pets which are not immunized are walking in the community parks, and places where there are other dogs and people. Possible spreading around infection to others. Not good.

Fees and Taxes

Again?
“ It seems to me that just a year or two ago, the rates were increased for the dog licenses... maybe even last year. And now again? And at a 25 percent increase for each service. How about modest increases that reflect the inflation rate, especially in these times of recession. I wouldn't have a problem with that... but it seems as though those in charge are just pulling numbers out of their _______ (imaginations) just like all other government agencies are doing and I am tired of it. ”

Dog License Fees Increased
“ The increase in Dog License fees in Hancock County is absolutely insane. I have a license for my dog. I keep her on a leash when she's outside. I don't let my dog go onto other people property to 'do her job'. And, I keep my dog away from other dogs. Meantime, my neighbors have six cats that run loose all over the neighborhood. They do 'their jobs' in our flower beds, and they mangle the garbage bags that we set out for pickup. Yet, cat owners are not required to obtain a license for their cats. Where's the justice? It doesn't take a rocket scientist. ”
