Hospital announces expansion
UPPER SANDUSKY -- Building construction and renovation will improve patient access and privacy at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky, hospital officials say.

A 30,000-square-foot building addition is planned on the eastern side of the medical office building, the hospital has announced. The office building will be renovated, too, as part of the $11 million project.

Physician offices will be on the main floor of the addition; oncology, pharmacy, sleep diagnostic testing and respiratory care services on the second floor; and cardiology, nuclear medicine, physical and occupational therapy and the Wellness Center will be on a "walk-out" lower level.

The physical therapy and occupational therapy gymnasium has operated in leased space since 2006, while the SleepCare center has been located in Carey since 2004.

Renovations to the medical office building's main floor will include a new hospital entrance, patient registration area, laboratory "blood draw" station, JobCare occupational health and emergency department.

The new, expanded emergency department will have separate entrances for walk-in patients and emergency medical service squads.

The medical office building's lower level will be remodeled for the Specialty Healthcare Center and patient accounts.

The project's goals include relocating and expanding the emergency department, consolidating outpatient services, and improving privacy, hospital officials said.

The plans also call for an oncology center, and renovations to bring magnetic resonance imaging in-house, and to add positron emission tomography to an existing computed tomography scanner.

The magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and computed tomography scanner are offered on-site now in a mobile structure.

By placing the diagnostic equipment within the hospital, schedule flexibility will improve for patients, according to hospital officials.

Bids are expected to be sought soon. Bids will be reviewed in August by the hospital's Board of Trustees and Board of Governors.

Construction may begin this fall, which is the hospital's 60th anniversary.

"We know the current economic climate can be a difficult time to consider a project like this," said Tom Menningen, chairman of the Board of Governors. "But, we also know that construction costs are likely to skyrocket in the future."

Construction may cost less now, he said, because contractors are seeking work.

Wyandot Memorial opened in September 1950 with 33 patient beds. An addition in 1961 doubled patient beds.

Additions were constructed in 1968, 1976 and 1992. The Medical Office Building was added in 1999.

The hospital is licensed for 25 inpatients and is designated a "critical access" hospital by Medicare.

“ yeah they can afford to build this hospital they don't need because they don't take half the populations insurance. I have to go to Findlay because they don't take Anthem. If I was to go to WMH I basically would pay full price for everything. Also I don't know why they need a big hospital anytime something happens they ship the person off to Columbus or Toledo. ”

News Briefs Firefighters discover 20 marijuana plants in house
After fighting a house fire early Monday at 815 Howard St., firefighters found 20 marijuana plants in the residence.

"They ran across it and called us," said police Sgt. Justin Hendren with the Hancock County METRICH Drug Enforcement Unit.

Police seized all 20 plants, and Hendren said charges are pending.

High-powered growing lights, fans, and a box filled with dried marijuana were also found in the house, according to a police report.

Investigators said an electrical short started the fire before 3 a.m. Monday.

The blaze caused an estimated $12,000 in damage to the residence, owned by Amanda Crawford. No one was injured, according to the Findlay Fire Department.

Carey announces holiday closing
CAREY -- Carey offices, including administrative, income tax and utilities, electric, wastewater treatment plant, and public works, will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

The curbside recycling program will be held Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 7-9.

Findlay trooper named sergeant
Trooper Jacob L. Fletcher, assigned to the Findlay post of the State Highway Patrol, was promoted to sergeant Wednesday by Patrol Superintendent Col. David Dicken.

With the promotion, Fletcher will stay at the Findlay post and serve as an assistant post commander, according to the patrol.

Fletcher began his patrol career in 2002 after graduating from the 139th Academy class and has been assigned to the Findlay post since.

Owens announces holiday schedule
The Toledo and Findlay campuses of Owens Community College will be closed Saturday through Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

There will be no classes and the college offices will be closed.

Classes will resume and offices will open again on Tuesday.

Holiday changes ad deadlines
The Courier won't be published on Monday, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Because of the holiday, some advertising deadlines have been moved up this week:

Black and white display advertising for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by noon Friday. Display advertising for Wednesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Color display advertising for the Thursday, Sept. 9 newspaper must be placed by Friday.

Classified advertising and City and Country advertising for Saturday's newspaper must be placed by 2 p.m. Friday. Classified ads for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Courier business and advertising offices will close at 3 p.m. Friday for the holiday.
