Hardin Northern scored three times before four minutes had ticked off the clock as the Polar Bears dumped the Black Knights 50-13 in a Blanchard Valley Conference game.
Trouble started early for the Black Knights (0-4) as the ball was snapped over punter Clay Sudlow's head causing a safety on just their fourth play from scrimmage.
Hardin Northern took full advantage. Tommy Wheeler powered through Van Buren defenders for a 37-yard touchdown run on the Polar Bears' opening play.
After a 12-yard punt on Van Buren's next possession, Hardin Northern quarterback Reid Parsons hit Wheeler in stride for a 41-yard touchdown pass.
It was on a 3rd-and-14 situation and gave the Polar Bears a 16-0 lead with 8:13 still left in the first quarter.
Van Buren's offense came into the game scoring just 6.7 points per game. Trailing by two scores early seemed to set the tone.
"At this stage of development of our team that's a hole we can't get into," said Van Buren coach Jeremy Nutter. "There's no question these games are 48 minutes long and we have to play every single one of them. That's my fault and we have to do a better job at everything."
It was more of the same in the second quarter.
Joe Walter scored on runs of 10 and 11 yards and Clint Brunow added a 3-yard scoring surge as the Polar Bears went into the lockerroom up 36-0.
"I didn't know what to expect. They had played some tougher teams," said Hardin Northern coach Pete Brunow, whose team evened its record at 2-2 with a win on its Senior Night.
"I think maybe we're a little better than we think we are. Our game plan was good tonight and the kids executed. That was the bottom line."
Wheeler, who picked up 172 of Hardin Northern's 372 rushing yards, added his third score on a 60-yard run on the Polar Bears' first possession of the second half.
Reed Poling capped the scoring with a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Van Buren, meanwhile, did finish with 147 yards on the ground most it coming in the fourth quarter when the two teams' backups were doing battle.
Van Buren's Logan Eaton scored on a 2-yard run with 9:49 left in the game. Ryan Adolph, the team's third quarterback, fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to Alec Rampe on the final play of the game.
