Elmwood boys out to defend regional title
By JAMIE BAKER

Staff Writer

Elmwood's boys cross country team will be looking to defend its OHSAA regional crown when competition begins at 11:05 a.m. Saturday at Tiffin's Hedges Boyer Park.

The top four teams and top 16 individuals in each race qualify for next week's state championships at Scioto Downs in Columbus.

The Royals may be the defending Division III boys champs but they may not be the favorite.

Delta is coming off an impressive district championship performance last weekend at Ottawa and the Panthers were ranked seventh in the final Division III state coaches' poll.

The Royals, who edged Delta by just three points for the regional crown last season, were ranked 11th in the final poll and will be led by junior Nick Goebel, who is the only area boy to have posted a sub 16-minute time this fall.

Liberty-Benton, Hopewell-Loudon, New Riegel and Ottoville will also be competing.

Liberty-Benton's Seth Butler, a two-time all-Ohioan, will be seeking his fourth trip to the state.

There will plenty of other area teams and individuals competing in four of the remaining five races at Tiffin.

• Findlay High will be looking to improve upon last year's 11th place regional finish in the Division I girls meet. The Trojans will also attempt to extend their streak of sending a runner to state nine straight seasons.

• Findlay High freshman Matt Waaland will be competing in the Division I boys meet. He qualified with a ninth place showing at last week's district.

• Liberty-Benton's girls will be trying to extend the longest state-qualifying streak when it competes in the Division III postion of the meet. The Eagles have advanced to Columbus 20 straight years coach Pat Wagner. Ottoville, led by defending individual regional titlist Shayla Siefker, is the defending regional champion. Elmwood will also be trying to earn a state bid for the second consecutive season.

Pandora-Gilboa and Carey will also compete in the Division III girls race.

• Upper Sandusky's Halee Stief will be the area's only representative in Division II. She was 35th at regionals in 2008.
