Weekend: Findlay First Edition to host Fall Fest Show Choir Festival on Oct. 31
Hardin County Fair - Kenton, Ohio
The 22nd Annual Findlay First Edition Fall Fest Show Choir Festival is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at Central Auditorium.

The Festival provides an opportunity for area show choirs to showcase their programs in a non-competitive environment.

General admission tickets are $8, $4 for seniors and students and are available in advance at Groman's Music and Main Street News in Findlay or at the door.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available during the evening in the cafeteria.

The evening will include the kickoff of FFE's raffle fundraiser, "Broadway in Chicago Weekend Getaway" for two. The winner will receive a two-night stay at the Hard Rock Hotel, two nights' parking, and a $200 gift certificate from Ticketmaster. The certificate can be used for concerts, museums, sporting events, Broadway shows, family entertainment or anything in Chicago from Ticketmaster.

The winner will be announced at FFE's Findlay Fest show choir competition on Jan. 30, 2010.

FFE's fall show includes "Big City Swing," "Wayne Newton Medley," "My Way" and "You and the Night and the Music." FFE is under the direction of Kevin Manley and assistant director Dan Wilson. Choreographer is Andy Haines.

Accompanying the group is the instrumental ensemble known as The Boingers.

The Cory-Rawson Impressions feature 27 singer/dancers; a seven-member back-up combo, the Stingers; and an eight-member crew. Their program includes "Don't Wish Too Hard," "Almost Like Being In Love," "The Climb," "Bad Case of Lovin' You," "Heartbreaker" and "Rockin' In Paradise." The group is directed by Christine Meyer.

The Association is a select vocal performance group from Van Buren High School. The group is accompanied by The Essentials. James Vaughn is the director, Antwon Chavis is the choreographer, Richard Eakin is the assistant director, and Linda Schwemley is cew assistant. The Association's program includes "It's Time," "I Love A Violin," "As If We Never Said Goodbye," "One Night Only/One Wild Night" and "Far From Over."

Ottawa-Glandorf's Out of the Blue is a non-competitive performance group of 38 musicians that performs throughout Putnam County. Ted Ellerbrock is director and Brenda Hoyt-Brackman is choreographer. Out of the Blue will perform "Rubberneckin'," "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat," "From a Distance" and "Hair."

The 34 singer/dancers from Riverdale Soundsation travel with a six-piece combo and a 10-member stage crew. Carrie Norris is the director and Brian Rodabaugh is the choreographer. The repertoire includes "Grand Illusion," "Mystery," "Orphans of God," "Disturbia/Scream" and "My Prerogative/Rumors."

The Harding Singers are pleased to be back in competition after a season of concentrating on community events. The Harding Singers are comprised of 25 singer/dancers directed by Liz Ciampa and an 11-piece band directed by Rick Baird. They are choreographed by Edye Cook-Skidmore. Their selections include "Don't Stop Believin'," "Slap That Bass," "Electricity" and "Fascinating Rhythm."

News Briefs Firefighters discover 20 marijuana plants in house
After fighting a house fire early Monday at 815 Howard St., firefighters found 20 marijuana plants in the residence.

"They ran across it and called us," said police Sgt. Justin Hendren with the Hancock County METRICH Drug Enforcement Unit.

Police seized all 20 plants, and Hendren said charges are pending.

High-powered growing lights, fans, and a box filled with dried marijuana were also found in the house, according to a police report.

Investigators said an electrical short started the fire before 3 a.m. Monday.

The blaze caused an estimated $12,000 in damage to the residence, owned by Amanda Crawford. No one was injured, according to the Findlay Fire Department.


Carey announces holiday closing
CAREY -- Carey offices, including administrative, income tax and utilities, electric, wastewater treatment plant, and public works, will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

The curbside recycling program will be held Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 7-9.


Findlay trooper named sergeant
Trooper Jacob L. Fletcher, assigned to the Findlay post of the State Highway Patrol, was promoted to sergeant Wednesday by Patrol Superintendent Col. David Dicken.

With the promotion, Fletcher will stay at the Findlay post and serve as an assistant post commander, according to the patrol.

Fletcher began his patrol career in 2002 after graduating from the 139th Academy class and has been assigned to the Findlay post since.


Owens announces holiday schedule
The Toledo and Findlay campuses of Owens Community College will be closed Saturday through Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

There will be no classes and the college offices will be closed.

Classes will resume and offices will open again on Tuesday.


Holiday changes ad deadlines
The Courier won't be published on Monday, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Because of the holiday, some advertising deadlines have been moved up this week:

Black and white display advertising for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by noon Friday. Display advertising for Wednesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Color display advertising for the Thursday, Sept. 9 newspaper must be placed by Friday.

Classified advertising and City and Country advertising for Saturday's newspaper must be placed by 2 p.m. Friday. Classified ads for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Courier business and advertising offices will close at 3 p.m. Friday for the holiday.
