Shooting victim described as 'one of a kind'

Family members of David Snyder, who was fatally shot on Sunday at his Jennifer Lane apartment, described him as an easygoing man with a sense of humor, a passion for the outdoors and a "one-of-a-kind" personality.

"He got along with everybody, and as far as I am concerned that was uncalled for," said David's father, Clarence Snyder of Findlay, regarding his son's homicide.

"He was just a good boy and there was no reason for it," Snyder said.

Police believe Findlay resident Cornelius Patterson, 30, fatally shot Snyder, 26. Patterson has been charged with murder and remains in Hancock County jail on a $1 million bond.

Patterson allegedly shot Snyder with a single bullet from a handgun in Snyder's upstairs apartment at Melrose Manor Apartments just before 5 a.m. on Sunday. Patterson lived below Snyder in the same apartment complex, according to police.

Snyder had argued with Patterson's girlfriend prior to the shooting, police said.

Snyder's mother, Peggy Cooper, who lives in the state of Oregon, described her son as the "class clown."

"He was extremely friendly, he was funny and he liked to sing," she said.

Snyder is also survived by two sisters and a brother.

"People just liked his personality. He was one of a kind," said his sister Jennifer Snyder. "He was just open, crazy and very sociable."

Snyder moved to Findlay eight years ago from Medford, Ore., where he grew up.

"He came here to meet our dad for the first time and he ended up staying and starting a life here," his sister said.

He worked at Press Paperboard Technologies as a printer, according to his father, and he enjoyed sprint car racing, fishing and camping.

Snyder's sister described him as a "ladies' man."

"I've never seen so many women so devastated in my life," she joked.

Snyder said her brother and Patterson had never been friends.

"David's girlfriend said ever since he (Patterson) moved in, they've had bad blood," she said.

Hancock County Prosecutor Mark Miller has said a special session of the grand jury will likely meet next week to consider the case against Patterson.

The recount will be completed on Wednesday at the county elections board office, 336 E. Main Street, Ottawa.

Incumbent Daniel R. Ellerbrock has secured his position on the board, earning 685 votes. However the remaining trustee spot will require a recount as Gery P. Wurth earned 598 votes and Mark J. Kahle collected 601 votes, according to official results.

An automatic recount is necessary if the margin is within one-half of 1 percent of total votes cast, according to state law.
