Weekend: Get ready for an evening of praise
Enjoy an evening of gospel music with the Sojourner Quartet, Exodus Quartet, Brothers In Grace and Morning Glory at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at Upper Room Church of God, 520 W. Bigelow.

The Sojourner Quartet is a Christian music ministry based in Findlay, and is made up of five born-again Christian friends. The group has traveled from New York to Kansas, Michigan to Florida and has had the opportunity to sing on gospel cruises traveling the Bahamas, Mexico and Belize. The group also has performed with The Hoppers, Ivan Parker, New Journey, Lighthouse, The Crabb Family, The Booth Brothers, Palmetto State Quartet, the Isaacs, the Talley Trio and many others.

Members of the group are Mark May (baritone), Dave Barker (bass), Mat Henry (lead) and Christina Dulworth (alto), with sound technician Rob DeBouver.

Exodus Quartet is a Southern gospel group based out of McComb. The group was formed in 2006 and its current members are Kevin Siferd (tenor), Jonathan Morse (baritone), Brad Richardson (lead) and Bill Morse (piano). Siferd, Jonathan Morse and Richardson "at one time or another" sang with Sojourner, but each stepped away to focus on their families. After meeting together a couple of times to sing just for fun, they decided to sing in a schedule that would allow them to be in their own churches most of the time.

Brothers In Grace, based in Hershey, Pa., has ministered throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, delighting audiences with their unique Southern gospel style music. The group has performed with some of gospel music's best known artists, as well as prominent speakers. Since their inception in 1994, they have recorded five projects and produced two concert videos.

The members of the group are Michael Mann (tenor), Dave Theis (lead), Ted Wissler (baritone) and Dave Miller (bass).

Morning Glory is a contemporary gospel quartet. Since two members are from Arlington, and two members are from Findlay, they consider themselves based out of Hancock County. They formed in the autumn of 1995 with the idea of occasionally singing at their home church of Arlington United Methodist. They ended up singing in many surrounding churches, nursing homes, retirement homes, at funerals, campgrounds, fairs, alumni reunions, mother-child banquets and Christmas banquets. In 2000, they opened for Ken Turner & New Millennium (NMQ) at the Allen County Fair. In 2002 they decided to take a break from singing, but periodically reunite. In 2004, they organized the First Semi-Annual Gospel Reunion.

The members of the group are Danna Dennis (lead), Karen Barchent (lead), Suzi Davis (second soprano) and Norma Reigle (alto).

Admission to the concert is free, but a good will offering will be received.

News Briefs Firefighters discover 20 marijuana plants in house
After fighting a house fire early Monday at 815 Howard St., firefighters found 20 marijuana plants in the residence.

"They ran across it and called us," said police Sgt. Justin Hendren with the Hancock County METRICH Drug Enforcement Unit.

Police seized all 20 plants, and Hendren said charges are pending.

High-powered growing lights, fans, and a box filled with dried marijuana were also found in the house, according to a police report.

Investigators said an electrical short started the fire before 3 a.m. Monday.

The blaze caused an estimated $12,000 in damage to the residence, owned by Amanda Crawford. No one was injured, according to the Findlay Fire Department.

Carey announces holiday closing
CAREY -- Carey offices, including administrative, income tax and utilities, electric, wastewater treatment plant, and public works, will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

The curbside recycling program will be held Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 7-9.

Findlay trooper named sergeant
Trooper Jacob L. Fletcher, assigned to the Findlay post of the State Highway Patrol, was promoted to sergeant Wednesday by Patrol Superintendent Col. David Dicken.

With the promotion, Fletcher will stay at the Findlay post and serve as an assistant post commander, according to the patrol.

Fletcher began his patrol career in 2002 after graduating from the 139th Academy class and has been assigned to the Findlay post since.

Owens announces holiday schedule
The Toledo and Findlay campuses of Owens Community College will be closed Saturday through Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

There will be no classes and the college offices will be closed.

Classes will resume and offices will open again on Tuesday.

Holiday changes ad deadlines
The Courier won't be published on Monday, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Because of the holiday, some advertising deadlines have been moved up this week:

Black and white display advertising for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by noon Friday. Display advertising for Wednesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Color display advertising for the Thursday, Sept. 9 newspaper must be placed by Friday.

Classified advertising and City and Country advertising for Saturday's newspaper must be placed by 2 p.m. Friday. Classified ads for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Courier business and advertising offices will close at 3 p.m. Friday for the holiday.
