ADA -- Ada's Mike Fell stepped up to meet reporters after another impressive offensive performance by his football team.
“Hey dad,” said a voice. “The next couple of weeks you're going to have to not let the other team score so much.”
“Yeah, I know,” Fell said.
“That's my former daughter, Samantha,” he said with a smile.
Fell can also smile knowing it may not matter how much the other team scores.
Not with Heath Jackson on his side.
Jackson, a senior, had a hand in all eight of Ada's touchdowns Friday as the Bulldogs strolled to a 55-20 Northwest Conference victory over Allen East to remain tied with Lima Central Catholic for first place in the league at 6-0.
“He (Jackson) is a lot of fun to coach and a lot of fun to watch,” said Fell, whose team is 7-0.
Jackson, who has verbally committed to Bowling Green State University, was an all-Ohio receiver for the Bulldogs before Ada quarterback Mitchell Faine went down with a season-ending knee injury last month.
Jackson moved to quarterback and in his third start Friday recorded 358 yards passing and ran for 155 more.
“That second-to-last touchdown pass, I thought he was going to run,” Fell said. “But he had his head up and was looking downfield and found the receiver. The defense has to respect that and come up to tackle him. Then that frees the receivers.”
Jackson started the game by scoring on Ada's first two possession, going in from 22 and 3 yards out. Jackson made sure the Bulldogs had a third score before the first quarter was over. He took off behind the left side of the line, cut back against the grain and went down the right sideline for a 60-yard touchdown.
“The adjustment to quarterback was not all that hard, because I was a quarterback from midgets up through junior high,” Jackson said. “But it is getting easier because now I know where the receivers are all running.”
Jackson opened the second quarter with an 11-yard run. He capped a nine-play, 78-yard drive when he lofted a 37-yard TD aerial, on a third-and-22 to Ty Jolliff.
For good measure, the Bulldogs closed out the half with a hook-and-ladder. Jackson tossed a 12-yard pass to Konnor Baker, who lateralled to Alex Weber. Weber covered the final 21 yards without being touched.
That gave Ada a 41-114 halftime lead.
“That's the Boise State hook-and-ladder,” Fell said. “We have done that a number of years. You just have to have good athletes to make it work and we have good athletes out there.”
Jackson found Austin Weber on a 34-yard TD pass in the third quarter and tossed a 16-yarder to Matt McBride in the fourth.
McBride made five catches for 82 yards, Baker had nine for 116 and Jolliff three for 80.
“It's a fun offense to play in. We have a lot of good athletes that work together,” Fell said.
While Jackson makes the big plays, he knows where it starts.
“It's big that the offensive line gives me a lot of time to throw the ball,” Jackson said. “That one time I had about seven seconds. They are the key to the offense.”
Allen East (3-5, 3-4) got 148 yards rushing from Andrew Rettig, who scored on a 37-yard run and a 13-yard pass from Aaron Swaney. Russell Goodwin added a one-yard score for the Mustangs.
