DEFIANCE -- One play into the fourth quarter in Friday's Division V, Region 18 final at Fred Brown Stadium, the Tinora Rams hit paydirt.
Lyndon Benecke took a pitch around left end and raced into the end zone from 37 yards out, cutting Patrick Henry's lead to 21-7 and putting Tinora back into the game.
The Patriots responded with a quick-strike touchdown on a 41-yard pass from Luke George to Justin Buenger and Patrick Henry went on to a 28-21 win.
The Patriots (13-0) will play Coldwater (12-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Donnell Stadium.
Coldwater defeated St. Henry 47-41 in four overtimes Friday at Wapakoneta.
Patrick Henry bottled up Tinora's running game all night long. Rams running back Blake Foor came into the game with 1,294 yards this season and more than 4,000 for his career. He gained just 8 yards on eight carries.
"They controlled things up front at the line of scrimmage," Tinora coach Kenny Krouse said. "We were never able to find a comfort zone on the ground."
Leading the way was Patrick Henry's defensive line.
Senior tackle Brad Yarnell is a load at 6-foot-1, 260 pounds, but the rest of the Patriots' five-man front weighs 200, 200, 190 and 175 pounds.
"We're not the biggest, we're not the fastest," defensive end Aaron George said. "We're not the strongest, but we want it more than anyone. It's heart."
"The game plan was to not let them get outside on us," nose tackle Xavier Dye said.
"And if they came inside, the defensive tackles and linebackers had to get low and stop them."
Dye was in the Tinora backfield all night. Freshman defensive end Jacob Carrizales added a key fourth-quarter stop.
George had two tackles for loss and recovered a fumble that led to a second-quarter Patrick Henry touchdown.
Tinora gained 122 yards on 32 carries in the game; the Rams came in averaging more than 260 yards rushing.
"We stuffed them quite a bit, but we also gave up some big plays," Patrick Henry coach Bill Inselmann said.
"Tinora was much tougher to defend than when we played them in 2004. Every time we seemed to get a bit of an advantage, their kids came back and made some plays."
After Buenger's touchdown reception, Tinora responded with two late scores. Rams quarterback Landon Drewes scored on 2- and 1-yard runs, the second coming with 45 seconds left in the game.
Patrick Henry's Kevin Kline jumped on the ensuing onside kick, allowing Patrick Henry to run out the clock.
Buenger started the scoring with a 1-yard run on Patrick Henry's second possession. That capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Lucas Rosebrook added a 1-yard run in the second quarter to give the Patriots a 14-0 halftime advantage.
Luke George, who finished with 107 yards rushing on 21 carries, extended Patrick Henry's lead to 21-0 with a 13-yard TD run midway through the third quarter. Patrick Henry gained 202 yards on the ground.
"Luke George running the ball tonight saved us," Inselmann said. "That's a senior who just makes plays."
Patrick Henry will make its fourth state semifinal appearance since 2004 next weekend. The Patriots won a state title in 2005.
"We've been here three times before and made it out once," Inselmann said.
"We'll treat this week like a state championship and let the week after take care of itself."
