Four members of Findlay High’s Greater Buckeye Conference championship team earned first-team honors in the 2009 Associated Press all-Northwest Ohio football selections released Thursday.
Linemen Garrett McQueen and Chris Opp, defensive back/receiver Zach Crawford and kicker Eric Schaible drew first-team recognition in balloting by a panel of sportswriters from across Northwest Ohio.
McQueen, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound senior, was a three-starter for Findlay. The GBC Lineman of the year in 2009, McQueen had 22 pancake blocks for the Trojans.
Opp starred on the defensive front with 70 tackles and 3 sacks. He had 37 solo tackles and 5 tackles for a loss.
Crawford was the GBC Defensive Back of the Year in 2009, but also a two-way standout. The 6-1, 170-pound senior had 56 solo stops and a team-high 77 total tackles. He also caught 43 passes for 452 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Schaible continued Findlay’s tradition of turning out outstanding kickers.
The 6-4, 190-pound senior converted 10-of-13 field goals, including a 44-yard game-winner in a 20-17 victory over Napoleon that clinched a GBC co-championship. Schaible, being recruited as a punter, also averaged 38.6 yards in that department.
Two FHS juniors were second-team all-Northwest Ohio picks in Division I, quarterback Matt Spragg, who threw for 1,337 yards and 15 TDs, and linebacker D.J. Pullom, who had 44 solo tackles and 7 tackles for losses among his 63 total stops.
Lineman Jeff Cole, defensive back/receiver/running back Alex Henry and linebacker Austin Miller earned honorable mention.
Fostoria Review Times sports editor Scott Cottos joined Courier sports reporters Jamie Baker and Dave Hanneman to talk about four key games coming up in Week 2.
