Several injury traffic accidents investigated
Streicher's
Hancock County Sheriff's deputies were kept busy with a rash of accidents Tuesday, injuring at least six people.

The sheriff's office reported that a 17-year-old Van Buren boy was hurt when his Jeep struck a utility pole on Hancock County 140, north of Ohio 613, in Portage Township.

The youth, whose name was not released, was driving south at 9:16 p.m. when he swerved to avoid hitting an animal in the roadway, deputies reported. The vehicle ended up on its side after striking the pole.

The sheriff's office reported that the teenager was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital by his parents where he was treated and released. The accident remains under investigation.

A Grand Rapids motorist was cited following a two-vehicle crash at 7:04 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Ohio 613 and Hancock County 139, in Portage Township, deputies reported.

According to the sheriff's office, Matthew Canterbury, 38, of Grand Rapids, was driving a GMC 1500 truck on the county road when he failed to yield the right of way from a traffic sign.

His truck collided with a Ford Mustang operated by John Cain, 29, of Van Buren, which had been traveling on Ohio 613, the sheriff's office reported.

Canterbury's vehicle then struck a stop sign post before coming to rest at the side of the intersection, according to the sheriff's office.

Canterbury was cited for disobeying a traffic control device.

Both drivers were treated at the scene by McComb EMS.

Assisting at the scene were McComb EMS and the Allen Township Fire Department.

Three people suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident at 5:30 p.m. on U.S. 224, east of Liberty Township 128.

The sheriff's office reported that Kenneth D. McDaniel, 23, of McComb, was driving west in a 2000 Honda Accord when his car went left of center and struck an eastbound Ford F250 driven by Aaron Freed, 42, of Union, Ky.

McDaniel, Freed and a passenger in the Freed vehicle, Gary Schwartz, 54, of Cincinnati, were treated for minor injuries at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

McDaniel was cited for driving left of center, deputies reported.

Assisting at the scene were the Liberty Township Fire Department, Shorty's Towing, Lovell's Towing and Hanco EMS.

The recount will be completed on Wednesday at the county elections board office, 336 E. Main Street, Ottawa.

Incumbent Daniel R. Ellerbrock has secured his position on the board, earning 685 votes. However the remaining trustee spot will require a recount as Gery P. Wurth earned 598 votes and Mark J. Kahle collected 601 votes, according to official results.

An automatic recount is necessary if the margin is within one-half of 1 percent of total votes cast, according to state law.
