Division IV Football: Kaufman runs for three TDs as O-G beats Triway WOOSTER -- Ottawa-Glandorf broke out to a 21-0 lead midway through the third quarter Saturday en route to a 28-14 victory over Wooster Triway in a Division IV, Region 14 quarterfinal football game at Wooster.
Logan Kaufman rushed for three touchdowns for the Titans (9-2), who will play Eastwood (9-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Donnell Stadium. Eastwood, a No.8 seed in the region, defeated previously unbeaten and No.1 seed Galion 35-6 on Saturday.
Fifth-seeded Ottawa-Glandorf controlled the clock against fourth-seeded Wooster (8-3). The Titans held the ball for nearly 30 minutes as the defense forced five turnovers and the offense rushed for 210 yards.
"It was an outstanding night on both sides of the ball," said O-G coach Ken Schriner, who has the Titans in the playoffs for the fifth straight year and the seventh time overall.
"We had good balance with the run and we were able to hit some key passes. They had eight guys on the line of scrimmage, so we had to be able to throw effectively to keep those guys off balance."
After a Mike Bendele field goal in the first quarter, Kaufman scored his first touchdown on a 1-yard run with just less than eight minutes left in the first half. Bendele hit another field goal in the closing seconds of the half to give O-G a 13-0 lead.
Kaufman scored twice in the third quarter on runs of 1 and 7 yards. Kaufman's touchdowns were sandwiched around Derek Carmichael's 25-yard touchdown pass to Zach Houmard that had briefly cut O-G's lead to 21-7. Carmichael later hit Sawyer Polen for a 3-yard touchdown pass.
O-G junior quarterback Nathan Kahle was 9-of-18 passing for 129 yards and led the team with 99 rushing yards on 17 carries. Craig Reiman rushed 10 times for 38 yards, Brandon Kuhlman had 10 carries for 35 yards and Kaufman rushed 12 times for 35 yards.
Jeff Siefker led the O-G defense with nine tackles and two forced fumbles. Brian Laubenthal had eight tackles and an interception, his school-record eighth of the season. Adam Hershberger and Kaufman each had seven tackles.
Carmichael was 26 for 52 passing for 312 yards, but was picked off three times. Wooster had just 6 yards on the ground.
O-G rushed just three down linemen against Wooster's potent passing attack, and it worked.
"Defensive coordinator Brian Heebsh did an outstanding job of scheming things," Schriner said.
"We knew their quarterback threw so many timing routes that we decided to get more guys into coverage. Defense has been our forte all year, and it did another great job tonight."
