TIFFIN -- It certainly wasn't easy, but Elmwood's boys cross country team is headed back to state.
Elmwood junior Nick Goebel was the second overall finisher to help the Royals end up fourth in the Division III boys race at the OHSAA regional championships at Hedges Boyer Park Saturday.
The top four teams in each race and the top 16 individuals earned berths to next Saturday's state championships at Scioto Downs.
The Royals weren't able to defend their regional title as Delta ran away from the field to win with 85 points. Hilltop (103) was second and Stryker nipped Elmwood 119-123 for third place.
For some teams, nothing short of a regional championship will do. But for Elmwood, just getting the chance to run another week was good enough on a cold, muddy and windy day.
"Survival. That's probably the word of the day," said Elmwood coach Chris Hailey. "I knew Delta would probably be untouchable and that Stryker and Hilltop would be stepping it up and they did.
"Our pack was much better than it has been. We have to move the whole pack up next week but I thought everyone ran well."
Goebel, a fifth-place finisher at regionals last season, crossed the finish line in 16:16.7, a little less than six seconds behind champion Colin Fisher of Delta.
"As long as our team makes it, I'll be satisfied. I was hoping for first but second is all right with me," he said. "I had enough left so I know I can go faster. I was just a little tired in this race. For some reason, I just didn't feel good."
Teammates Dexter Lee (23rd, 17:23), Wes Lee (31st, 17:38) and Josh Boes (48th, 17:56) also finished in the top 50 to pave Elmwood's road to Columbus.
The rest of the day belonged to Liberty-Benton's Seth Butler, Hopewell-Loudon's Tyler Wise and Fostoria St. Wendelin's Mark Berton who will represent their schools at state in Division III.
Butler will be making his fourth appearance in Columbus after finishing eighth (16:49). Wise was next in ninth place (16:50) while Berton ended up 13th (17:02).
It will be Berton's first trip to Scioto Downs.
Berton played a little less basketball, but did a lot more running during the summer. And if his post-meet smile was any indication, all of the extra miles he put in during the summer were certainly worth it.
"I actually trained during the summer and didn't play basketball. I think that killed me last year because I hurt my ankle a little bit and never really recovered," Berton said.
"There were some times during the summer I didn't want to do it, but I ran any way. I knew if I wanted to make it to state I had to run and do as much work as I could to get better."
Findlay High freshman Matt Waaland made his regional 7debut in the Division I boys race. He capped the season by placing 50th (16:54.2).
