Fremont's Hoelzer opens with a 74

Two talented young golfers turned in the best rounds of the day and three Findlay golfers found themselves in second place Monday after the first round of the Findlay Area Golf Association's National Junior Golf Tournament at Red Hawk Run Golf Course.

Brandon Hoelzer, who will be a sophomore at Fremont Ross, fired a 74, and Joshua Brooks, a 13-year-old from Ashland, had a 75 for the two best scores of Monday's first round. They stood 1-2 in the boys 13-15 competition.

Findlay's Michael Popovec is second in the boys 16-18 division and Stephanie St.-Jean (16-18) and Ali Mallett (13-15) are second in their brackets of the girls tournament.

Popovec carded a 77 and is tied with Brian VanDeMotter of Rocky River. They are one stroke back of Ashland's Stephen Sinchok.

St.-Jean fired a 79 Monday, and is five shots back of Lima's Ellen Huffman. Mallett (112) is second to Elmore's Mikayla Baer (102).

In the boys 16-18 division, Findlay's D. Addison Sterling is tied for fifth (79), Curtis Eckert is seventh (81), Patrick Coward 13th (83) and Sam Malloy 14th (84).

Eli Stacy is sixth (80) and Findlay's Nick Curto and Andrew Kotey and Jenera's Dexter Wilson are tied for ninth (92) in the boys 13-15 bracket.

Findlay's Kaitlyn VanGunten is fourth (83) and Lauren Mains fifth (105) in the girls 16-18 competition,

The tournament continues today, with the final round being played Wednesday.
