District Hockey: FHS rallies in secod period to beat Anthony Wayne
SYLVANIA — Findlay High's hockey team fell behind quickly, but used a fast flurry of goals in the second period to knock off Anthony Wayne 6-3 in a district tournament hockey game at Tam-O-Shanter on Saturday night.
With the win, Findlay advances to take on rival Bowling Green in the next round of the tournament at 8 p.m. Thursday at Tam-O-Shanter.
The win over the Generals also avenges a 3-2 defeat the Trojans suffered at the hands of Anthony Wayne during the FHS Holiday Tournament earlier this season.
In the first match-up, Anthony Wayne goalkeeper Dan Korelewski stopped nearly 50 FHS shots.
"Looking at tapes we figured out a couple of things. He's a big goalie and talented goalie. We wanted to throw the puck at him, work on our rebounds and put some traffic in front of the net," said Findlay hockey coach Dan St.-Jean.
After falling behind 2-0 early on a pair of Zack Ulrich goals, Findlay was able to get on the board with a power play goal, the first of four tallies by Tyler Thines, with 48 seconds left in the first period.
"It was a long week and we just kind of came out a little flat," St.-Jean said. "Then, toward the end of the period, we regrouped and talked about it and that's when things really changed. We just played the hockey we're capable of playing."
Zack Seipel pushed the Generals' lead to 3-1 before the Trojans finally got their offense going.
Thines scored three second-period goals to give Findlay the lead for good.
Layne Martin and Mark Roepke were credited with assists on Thines' first goal of the second period. Thines' third goal of the night came short-handed with an assist from Ryan Chance. Chance and Martin teamed up for assists on the final tally of the frame.
Jo Jo Brigadoi scored at 9:48 of the third period on assists from Clay Rasmussen and Spencer Lee. Greg Toupalik closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 6:50 remaining in the contest.
Findlay had a 40-18 edge in shots. Travis Friar recorded 15 saves. Korelewski registered 34 saves for the Generals.
