FOSTORIA -- With a seven-point lead going into the fourth quarter, foul-plagued Fostoria High School could ill afford to let Upper Sandusky have many free opportunities in the final eight minutes.
But a seven-point run late in the fourth period, including a breakaway layup by junior Olivia Frey with 42 seconds left in the game, saw Upper Sandusky snatch a 43-41 win from Fostoria in Tuesday's Northern Ohio League game.
After a timeout, the Lady Rams (2-5 overall, 2-3 NOL) utilized their double-bonus advantage.
Some aggressive dribbling from Shayleen Wood gave the Fostoria (1-6, 1-4) defense fits, resulting in four consecutive points from the free-throw line before Frey's game-winner.
Wood scored 15 points on the night and gathered 13 rebounds.
“They made their free throws when they had to,” said Fostoria coach Mat Swortchek. “They were able to switch momentum and do what they needed to do, and we didn't do what we needed to do.”
In contrast to its finish, the game started off slowly, with neither team able to gain much momentum. The game's first field goal wasn't scored until 4½ minutes into the first period, with both teams giving up three turnovers apiece at that point.
But the game came to life when Veronica Wonderly, who led Fostoria with 12 points, seven steals and four assists, intercepted a pass at mid-court and ran it in for a layup.
“Both teams were playing good defense and exhibited good ball control in the first half,” Swortchek said.
After a 17-17 hafltime tie, Fostoria came out in the third period with renewed vigor and outscored the Lady Rams 14-7 before the start of the fourth quarter.
However, the lead wouldn't hold and Fostoria, in turn, was outscored 19-10 in the final period.
“We were inept in the fourth quarter and we made too many mental mistakes,” Swortchek said.
Rams seniors Emily England and Emily Caudill were two players who took the most advantage of such mistakes.
England scored 11 points, while Caudill scored six points and led her team with three steals.
Senior Aja Hall, Fostoria's career leader in scoring and rebounding, got into foul trouble early in the third quarter and finished with just four points and nine rebounds.
“When you take Aja Hall off the court, we struggle,” Swortchek said. “Offensively, our rebounding wasn't as strong and our scoring wasn't as strong.”
Roddy 0-0--0, Porter 0-0--0, Jackson 3-1--7, Wonderly 5-2--12, A. Hall 2-0--4, Nye 0-0--0, Newlove 1-2--8, Depp 4-2--10, Bercaw 0-0--0, C. Hall 0-0--0, Hernandez 0-0--0. TOTALS: 17-50 5-10 -- 41.
