Wrestling: Findlay's Alexander, Gladstone place at Medina
Interstate Court Plaza - Findlay - I-75 Exit #159
MEDINA -- Findlay High School senior Michael Alexander had been taken down just two times all season heading into the Medina Invitational Tournament.

In Tuesday's 171-pound championship match against Westerville North's Josh Demas, he was taken down three times in the first period.

Demas, a returning Division I state champion and the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler, took Alexander down with an ankle pick on the opening whistle and went on to score a 12-5 win over the Trojan standout in the title bout.

“Demas took Michael down three times in the first 15 seconds of the match,” said Findlay coach Ben Kirian. “He was down 6-2 after the first period and just couldn't get it going.

“Demas is going to stay at 171. We got this match on film, we'll watch it and learn from it and hopefully get another shot at him in March.”

Alexander, now 20-2 on the season, reached the title match by whipping Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy's Alex Utley 9-3.

Classmate Max Gladstone also had a big day as he finished third in the 285-pound class.

Gladstone dropped a 3-1 overtime decision to Thornville Sheridan's Drew Carpenter in the semis. He wrapped up the tournament by stopping New Lexington's Josh Lee 6-3 and pinning Ashland Crestview's Clint Endicott in 1:14.

“Max didn't move real well in the semis and he made a few mistakes,” Kirian said. “But he bounced back after the loss and wrestled extremely well.”

Findlay Jamael Hitson (140) and Jordan Fenton (160) fell a match short of placing for the Trojans, who finished 15th in the 38-team field with 67 points.

Three Elmwood wrestlers also earned spots on the awards stand.

Nick Goebel, a returning state champion, has his 70-match win streak snapped in the semifinals when he dropped a 6-3 decision to Medina's Nick Griffith at 112 pounds. He regrouped to knock off Mason's Brian Luria 4-2 in his next match and claimed third place with a 3-2 overtime win over Urichsville Claymont's Luke Langdon.

The Royals' Westley Lee was sixth at 125 pounds while brother Dexter Lee ended up seventh at 103.

Elmwood was 25th in the team standings with 46 points.
