One all-Ohio standout and four state qualifiers will lead the Findlay High swim teams into action today when the Trojans host Wapakoneta at 6:30 p.m. in their 2009-10 season opener at Sink Natatorium.
Seniors Jonathan Shaffer, a two-time state qualifier in the 100-yard breaststroke, Kian Lauth and Logan Benjamin headline the FHS boys squad.
Shaffer was 13th in the 2009 state meet in his specialty.
Nick Topel. Phil Miller, Jared Moffat and diver Nick Kinn also return for the Trojans, who won both sectional and district titles last season.
FHS head coach Jeff Wobser, beginning his ninth year running the program, is also counting on freshmen Kyle Hopkins and Dietrich Hinesman, who have turned in excellent results in FAST (Findlay Area Swim Team) competition, to make an immediate impact at the high school level.
State qualifiers Jess Braddock, Paige Madden and Maggie Malaney return to the FHS girls team.
All three were on last year's 200 freestyle relay team that reached the state meet in Canton.
Anna Miller, Sarah Stahl, Tricia Wilkins, Kortney Mullen, Leah Zelinsky and diver Anne-Lore Devrees also scored points in helping Findlay win the district girls title.
Tiffany Gerken, Krista Orwick and Brooke Morgan also return, with freshman Ashley Lewis also expected to contribute as the Trojans look to unseat Napoleon as the reigning Greater Buckeye Conference champion.
Fostoria Review Times sports editor Scott Cottos joined Courier sports reporters Jamie Baker and Dave Hanneman to talk about four key games coming up in Week 2.
