Findlay High School may be making a move north when it comes to high school sports.
Nate Weihrauch, Findlay High's athletics director, told the Findlay Board of Education Monday he has been trying to determine the best way for the school's sports teams to survive the demise of the six-team Greater Buckeye Conference.
The best option is to have Findlay join the Toledo City League, according to Weihrauch.
After Weihrauch presented information, board members told Weihrauch he may seek admission into the Toledo City League. If not Findlay could find itself without a league affiliation and playing an independent schedule.
"My recommendation would be to let him complete the process," Findlay Superintendent Dean Wittwer said.
Findlay's current conference, the Greater Buckeye Conference, is falling apart. Sandusky is leaving to join the Northern Ohio League and Napoleon will become a member of the Northern Lakes League. That would leave just four teams left in the league: Findlay, Lima Senior, Marion Harding and Fremont-Ross.
Weihrauch said he weighed his choices between joining several area athletic conferences and becoming an independent. Some area conferences notified him that they are not admitting new members. The Toledo City League currently has 12 teams all located in the city or its suburbs.
A team has to give two years notice before withdrawing from a conference, which means that if Findlay is admitted into the Toledo City League, it would not take effect until at least the 2011-2012 school year.
Becoming a member of the Toledo City League means Findlay would play Toledo teams almost exclusively.
Separately, Weihrauch also announced the school's intention to launch an official junior varsity hockey team this year, but is still waiting for official approval from the Findlay School Board.
To pay for the team, families would be charged no more than $300 per player, Weihrauch said. The school already has an agreement with The Cube to charge the team for game time, but not practices, reducing costs.
School board members pointed out that ice time may get more expensive when the University of Findlay closes its rink in 2010.
"It could get more expensive for parents as ice gets more costly," Wittwer said.
Wittwer was enthusiastic about starting an official JV team in the community, but board member Jeff Shrader suggested the board wait until next month's board meeting to take an official vote so members of the public can weigh in on the plan.
Weihrauch said they predict the team to be full for the next several years, based on numbers of kids playing in the Findlay Area Hockey Association.
Also, the board officially hired Mark Laux as the interim head girls' soccer coach. He will replace Kevin Veroneau, who resigned the position last week.
Fostoria Review Times sports editor Scott Cottos joined Courier sports reporters Jamie Baker and Dave Hanneman to talk about four key games coming up in Week 2.
