Weekend tennis: Upper Sandusky has big numbers

Area girls tennis teams are hoping for bigger and better things as the 2009 season gets into full swing this week.

Matt Newell takes over as head coach at Upper Sandusky this fall and has 23 girls on the team.

But he will field a young lineup with veterans Olivia Frey and Jordan Coakley leading the way.

The duo captured the Northern Ohio League's No.2 doubles title in 2008 but Frey will move into the No.1 singles spot and Coakley will be inserted into the No.1 doubles spot to start the season.

Bluffton played to a .500 season in Peter Diller's first year. But he has his entire lineup back this season and a talented freshman in Emily Sprague leading the way.



Bluffton

Head Coach: Peter Diller (2nd year).

2008 RECORD: 8-8.

RETURNING LETTERWINNERS: Ashlynn Gable, soph.; Kelsey Kiene, sr.; Jessica Liska, sr.; Jess Hunter, jr.; Tricia Bellman, sr.; Kristi Geiser, soph..

TOP PROSPECTS: Emily Sprague, fr.; Katie McCracken, sr.; Amanda Solmonson, soph.

NOTABLE: The entire team is back for Bluffton. With a dozen players on the roster Diller is looking forward to having quite a bit more depth in his second season as head coach.



Fostoria

Head Coach: Jenny Miller (2nd year, 0-17).

2008 RECORD: 0-17 overall/8th in Northern Ohio League.

RETURNING LETTERWINNER: Erica Depp, sr.; Andrea Wyant, jr.; Brianna Beard, soph.; Paige Basinger, sr.; Danielle Walter, soph.; Kali August, soph.

TOP PROSPECTS: Stephanie Porter, jr.; Karlee Grine, soph.; Katie Nye, soph.; Corissa Cramer, soph.; Robyn Shaver, soph.; Cori Garrett, fr.

NOTABLE: With six experienced players back for this season, the Redmen should be vastly improved and make a move up the ladder in the Northern Ohio League.



Ottawa-Glandorf

HEAD COACH: Ken Pollitz (3rd year).

2008 RECORD: 3-12 overall, 2-7 Western Buckeye League.

RETURNING LETTERWINNERS: Jenna Schroeder, sr.; Mary Wischmeyer, sr.; Kristen Zender, jr.

TOP PROSPECTS: Kathy Arnold, soph.; Ashley Heckman, fr.; Jeanette Kaufman, fr.; Kim Kahle, fr.; Melissa Crumrine, fr.; Haley Inniger, fr.; Torie Allgire, fr.

NOTABLE: With all the girls working hard the Titans hope to improve their record and be more competitive especially in the WBL.



Upper Sandusky

HEAD COACH: Matt Newell (1st year).

NOTABLE: Frey and Coakley teamed up to win the Northern Ohio League double title last spring. Frey will take over the duties this season as Upper Sandusky's No.1 singles player.
