TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Findlay High graduate Jennifer Spieldenner will be looking to claim the Twenty-12 Elite Series title and possibly win a U-23 national championship as well when she competes this weekend in the USA Triathlon Elite National Championship in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The meet could go a long way in determining who will represent the United States in the women's triathlon at the 2012 Olympics in London. Mary Beth Ellis, Jenna Shoemaker and Jasmine Oenick are among the top U.S. women in the elite competition, along with Hayley Peirsol.
Spieldenner leads them all, however, in the Twenty-12 Elite Race Series, a collection of four triathlons that lead up to the national championship. Athletes earn points based on their finish in those races, and Spieldenner enters the nationals with 27 total points from those events. Ellis, Shoemaker and Alexis Smith of the U.S. and Australia's Emma Moffatt and Kate McIlroy all have 25.
Spieldenner is considered one of the favorites in the U-23 division and a top contender for elite recognition as well. The 2004 FHS graduate is coming off a dominating win in the 23rd Cleveland Triathlon of Champions, winning the Olympic distance event in a time of 2 hours, 13 minutes.
In international elite women's competition, Spieldenner was second (2:11.20) in the ITU Triathlon/Pan American Cup in Lima, Peru in March and third (2:07.17) in the Mazatlan ITU Triathlon in Mexico in April.
