High School Athletics: Findlay looking at Toledo City League?
Findlay and Lima Senior, members of a dwindling Greater Buckeye Conference, are reportedly considering the Toledo City League as a possible new home.
Athletic Directors Nate Weihrauch of Findlay and Jim Offenbaker of Lima Senior jointly issued a press release Friday.
It stated, "The Lima City Schools and the Findlay City Schools have joined efforts to seek athletic conference membership to various leagues. We have recently been in communication with the Toledo City League about possible membership. All of the members of the Greater Buckeye Conference are working diligently to seek membership to an athletic conference.
"The changing of a conference requires a great deal of research and approval of various groups — coaches, athletic board of controls and board of educations. This is an exploratory process and the details of the conversations will not be able to be released at this time, so as not to jeopardize the process.
"No final decision has been made by any party involved."
The six-team GBC will become a four-team league beginning with the 2011-12 school year. That is when Napoleon becomes a member of the Northern Lakes League and Sandusky a member of the Northern Ohio League.
When Napoleon and Sandusky leave, the GBC will include just Findlay, Lima Senior, Marion Harding and Fremont Ross.
Marion Harding approached the NOL seeking membership, but was not admitted. Lima Senior made overtures to the Western Buckeye League but was told the WBL was not looking to expand at this time. Fremont Ross has reportedly looked at both the Toledo City League and the NOL for possible membership.
Should the GBC try to function as a four-team league, it would mean member schools would have to find seven non-league opponents in football, a difficult task considering the conference schedules of nearly every other school in the state. Going independent would bring about scheduling problems as well.
Findlay, Lima Senior, Fremont Ross and Marion Harding are Division I-sized schools in all boys and girls sports.
The Toledo City League currently consists of 12 schools: St. John's, St. Francis, Central Catholic, Whitmer, Rogers, Start, Waite, Bowsher, Libbey, Woodward, Scott and Oregon Clay.
Findlay played Whitmer and Oregon Clay on a regular basis when they were in the Great Lakes League. Findlay currently plays St. John's and St. Francis in football.
Findlay also faces several TCL schools in a number of athletic contests, including Scott, Rogers, St. Francis, Whitmer and Waite in boys basketball and Toledo St. Ursula and Central Catholic in girls basketball.
