No one running for some elected positions

So far, competition is scarce for seven Arcadia posts up for grabs in the November election.

The village in northeast Hancock County, population 537, has four open council seats, three open seats on the local school board, and zero candidates.

The deadline to file a candidacy petition with the Hancock County Board of Elections for the November election is 4 p.m. Aug. 20.

"A lot of the villages (in Hancock County) just don't have the interest or competition anymore," said Lori Miller, assistant director of the board of elections.

But there is still time.

On Tuesday, people were still requesting candidacy petitions from the board of elections, said elections board Director Jody O'Brien.

Countywide, every school board except Findlay has three seats open for election this year. Findlay has two.

All villages in the county have four council seats open, and all townships have two trustee positions open. In most cases, at least one person has filed or requested a candidacy petition.

Also, Arlington, Benton Ridge, Mount Blanchard, Mount Cory and Rawson each have one seat open on the Board of Public Affairs.

The school board, village and township posts are nonpartisan, meaning that candidates don't run by political party.

Those seeking a township trustee position must be 18 years old by Nov. 3 and be a registered elector of the township. He or she must gather at least 25 signatures of registered township voters.

Those seeking village council seats need at least 10 signatures, must be 18, and be a registered elector of the village.

Arcadia and Rawson have no candidates for the four council seats yet.

Candidates for Findlay school board need 75 signatures, and county school board candidates need 25 signatures.

Arcadia and McComb have no candidates yet for the three open school board seats. Candidates must be 18 and a registered voter in the school district.

For the Hancock County Educational Service Center, potential candidates must gather 50 signatures.

Candidates for all posts must pay a filing fee of $30.

Township trustees make considerably more money than village council members. Arcadia Council members, for example, make just $900 annually.

Trustees' salaries are based on the size of the township's annual budget, but cannot exceed about $18,000, according to the Ohio Township Association.

Candidacy petitions can be picked up at the Hancock County Board of Elections, 201 E. Lincoln St., Findlay.

Recount planned in trustee's race
OTTAWA -- After certifying election results on Wednesday, the Putnam County Board of Elections has announced a recount will be required for the Union Township trustee race, according to Deputy Director Shelly Burkhart.

The recount will be completed on Wednesday at the county elections board office, 336 E. Main Street, Ottawa.

Incumbent Daniel R. Ellerbrock has secured his position on the board, earning 685 votes. However the remaining trustee spot will require a recount as Gery P. Wurth earned 598 votes and Mark J. Kahle collected 601 votes, according to official results.

An automatic recount is necessary if the margin is within one-half of 1 percent of total votes cast, according to state law.
