Home Depot to be invited to McComb
By ERIC SCHAADT

Staff Writer

McCOMB -- If Home Depot can't find a home west of Van Buren, the village of McComb would like to roll out a welcome mat.

Home Depot is seeking approval of a tax abatement from the Allen Township trustees before it agrees to bring its warehouse and 300 jobs to the area.

Seven miles away is an 80-acre site north of McComb that is waiting to be turned into an industrial park, village officials say.

McComb Councilwoman Lisa Mansfield urged her peers Monday to let Home Depot officials know that McComb would be interested.

"I think we need to do something formally,' Councilwoman Mansfield said.

Council agreed to draft a letter to send to the company.

The proposed site, which is a farm field off Ohio 235, is available to the village to be converted into an industrial park if there are interested businesses.

In other matters, Council upheld a citizen's right to keep his chickens on his property.

Mike George had been served with a notice by the village that he was in apparent violation of a village ordinance, but a further reading of the animal ordinance revealed he was not in violation.

The ordinance bans animals which are "offensive" to others. A neighbor had complained to village officials that owning chickens violated the ordinance.

"It doesn't sound like he's in violation," Village Solicitor Dave Hackenberg told Council.

Also, Council fielded a complaint from San VanAtta, who had been told he needs to erect a fence around his swimming pool.

Village rules say a body of water four feet or more in depth must have a fence.

"If I put a fence around it, it will look like hell," VanAtta maintained.

He also said youths still can gain access, despite fencing.

Council said he could apply for a variance with the village administrator.

In other business, council said the community pool will close Sept. 12.

“ THERE ARE ALWAYS POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES. CUTTING OUT THE LAME ARGUMENTS OF THE MOUTHY MINORITY-THOSE OPPOSING HOME DEPOT, IT IS READILY APARENT THAT THE POSITIVES OUTWAY THE NEGATIVES. THIS COULD BE A MAJOR STEP FOWARD FOR ALLEN TWP. AND HANCOCK COUNTY. THE REVISED TAX ABATEMENT CERTAINLY GOES A LONG WAY IN MAKING THIS AN OPPORTUNITY OF MUTUAL BENEFIT FOR ALL CONCERNED. NOTHING WOULD EVER SATISFY THE IGNORANT,UNINFORMED NEADERTHALS SO VEHEMETLY OPPOSED TO THIS PROJECT.

“ Can someone explain why Home Depot is not looking at the County Road 99 exchange? The road was developed for the truck traffic and there seems to be plenty of farmland adjacent to the highway.

Perhaps those owning land along County Road 99 are asking more than Home Depot will spend for land.

“ The real concern is not the increased truck traffic on 613. Though the trucks are sure tearing up SR 18 by CSX. It's the traffic coming off and on TR 142 and TR 14. Especially TR 14. Pilot already has it conjested at certain times of the day, and it will only get worse. A stoplight will not work at TR 14 intersection unless it a 5 way. And who do you think is going to pay to put that in, especially since the State of Ohio says no. I have no problem with Allen Twp getting the facility though I thought the 85/15 Tax Abatement was ludicrous. I'm not thrilled with the 60/10 though it is more in line with others already given. But the others are where they belong not in the middle of a residential area. Give them the 60/10 on CR99 or let them build on TR14 at full price or go somewhere else. And I only say build on TR 14 because I know if they want to build there bad enough we can't stop them so we should at least make it worth our trouble. I believe there are alot of people that would agree with me. ”

“ The semi traffic that would be added would not cause that much more impact to McComb since there is already a multitude of Semi traffic going through on its way toward Leipsic to Iams and Protec. Not to mention whenever I-75 is blocked all the semi's reroute to SR 235 through McComb The fact is that McComb and northwest Hancock county needs a economic boost. Why should McComb continue to pass up on a piece of the pie. ”
