12 area officers complete crisis intervention training

Twelve law enforcement officers have become the latest graduates of the Crisis Intervention Team training offered through the Hancock County Board of Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services.

The class was completed Feb. 15 and involved 10 corrections officers from the Hancock County Sheriff's Office and two University of Findlay security officers.

The crisis training provides officers with safe ways to resolve psychiatric crisis situations that they face in the line of duty. The officers undergo 40 hours of training to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illnesses and how to intervene to resolve crises.

Hancock County graduated its first class of 24 officers in 2002. Since then, classes have been held each year.

There are currently 45 officers from the Findlay Police Department and 34 from the sheriff's office who have gone through the training.

In addition, 21 dispatchers from area law enforcement agencies have received training to increase their knowledge of how to handle calls.

The training was adapted for the corrections side of law enforcement, and since the beginning of 2007, 35 corrections officers have graduated from the training.

The crisis training is supported by levy funds from Mental Health Services, Century Health, Family Resource Centers, Focus on Friends, and the Hancock County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Depression Bi-Polar Support Alliance.

News Briefs Ed Cole to head Biglick Trustees
Ed Cole was elected as chairman of the Biglick Township Trustees at a recent reorganizational meeting

Richard Gassman was chosen as vice chairman. Gary George is the third trustee, and Janis Cole is the fiscal officer.

Regular trustee meetings will be at 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month at the township meeting house, 8273 Township 258.
