Dan Koralewski had a target on his chest all night.
But the Anthony Wayne goalie also had the reflexes of a cat and a puck magnet in his glove.
"If he's not the best (goalie) in the state, I haven't see one better," Anthony Wayne coach Dave Faulkner said after Koralewski, a long and lanky 6-foot-5 senior, stopped 48 of Findlay's 50 shots in the Generals' 3-2 overtime win over the Trojans in the opening game of the Trojan Invitational Hockey Tournament at The Cube Friday night.
"We really did not play well, but Dan was fantastic. He did everything tonight."
Findlay coach Dan St. Jean felt the same way.
"Their goalie was the star of the game," St. Jean said. "Basically, he robbed us all night long."
Findlay did beat Koralewski twice, both times in the second period. Tony Thines scored a power play goal three minutes into the period to knot the game 1-1, and Trey Bracy gave Findlay a 2-1 lead just minutes later.
Koralewski stoned Findlay the rest of the way, however, and Anthony Wayne, despite being outshot 50-14 made its opportunities count.
The Generals tied the game late in the second period on Curtis Watkins' second goal of the night. They won it with 42 seconds left in overtime when Zak Seipel took a pass from Zach Ulrich, faked Findlay goalie Travis Friar one way, and slid the puck into the left corner of the net.
Findlay, winless in its last five games (0-4-1), fell to 3-5-3 overall. Anthony Wayne improved to 7-4-1 with what proved to be a milestone win for the program.
"This is a big step for us. It's our first ever win over a Red Division team," Faulkner said of the Generals, who compete in the Blue Division of the Northwest Hockey Conference.
"When they hired me eight years ago, this is where they wanted us to get to. The big difference between their division and ours is consistency. We're not there yet, but we're getting close."
Findlay peppered Koralewski with 12 shots in the first period, but ended the period down 1-0. The Trojans broke through in the second period, thanks to a 21-5 barrage in shots.
"You can't say we played bad," St. Jean said. "Obviously we moved the puck well offensively to get 50 shots. But defensively when we lose the puck we have to be more alert. They got three goals because of turnovers, and that cost us."
Findlay appeared to have things going its way after Thines scored his sixth goal of the season on assists from Layne Martin and Alex Henry. Three minutes later, Bracy and Nolyn Croy worked the give-and-go to perfection, with Bracy giving Findlay a 2-1 edge with 9:04 left in the period. Mark Roepke also assisted on the play.
Findlay kept throwing one jab after another at Anthony Wayne. But Koralewski and the Generals kept dodging one haymaker after another.
"They pulled a Mohammad Ali rope-a-dope on us all night long," St. Jean said. "We'd throw a punch at him and throw a punch at him and throw a punch at him, but when you have plexiglass back there it's kind of tough to get through it.
"It's one of those things. If we had a series with them, I think we'd come out on top. Unfortunately it's a one-shot deal. This was their night and their goalie was their star."
Friar made 12 saves in goal for Findlay.
The tournament continues today with Olentangy and Olentagy Liberty meeting in an 11 a.m. matchup. Anthony Wayne takes on Olentangy at 5 p.m. and Findlay faces Liberty at 7 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday with Anthony Wayne facing Liberty at 5 p.m. and Findlay and Olentangy playing at 7 p.m.
