Police: Woman was armed & dangerous & naked

FOSTORIA — A naked woman who chased her husband down the street with a knife is facing multiple charges from the incident, Fostoria police say.

Several officers struggled with Elizabeth C. Springer, 26, 249 College St., before arresting her following a domestic dispute which started at the couple's home Tuesday.

She faces charges of felonious assault; child endangerment; aggravated burglary; and vandalism for the damage she allegedly caused to a police cruiser after being arrested.

Ryan M. Springer told police his wife was taking a bath with their 1-year-old daughter in their home when he heard his daughter crying, according to Police Chief John McGuire.

Ryan Springer checked on them, believed his wife may have been trying to harm the child, and he took the child away from her and into another room.

Once he settled the girl down, Springer said, he saw his wife coming toward him with a knife in each hand.

Chief McGuire said the couple struggled, and Springer was bitten multiple times on one arm and stabbed twice in the thigh before escaping and running toward a friend's house at 249 W. North St. for help.

Once Springer was inside, his friend locked the door when they saw Elizabeth Springer chasing after him. Police were told she was still carrying the knives and was still naked from the bath.

By the time officers arrived at the North Street address shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, they said Elizabeth Springer had kicked a screen out of a front window to get inside, but had been disarmed.

McGuire said the woman then fled the scene on foot and went back to her home where officers found her hiding in the bushes, still naked.

Three officers were needed to restrain her, as she was "fighting and spitting and kicking," McGuire said. He said officers used pepper spray on her as well, and that they covered her with a blanket and put her in a police cruiser.

But once the woman was in the car, McGuire said, she tried to kick out a window and bent part of the door frame.

McGuire said the Springers' child was left alone for "a very short time" at her home and was unharmed. The child was released to her grandmother while Children's Services looks into the incident.

The parents were transported to Fostoria Community Hospital. Ryan Springer was treated for his wounds and released, and Elizabeth Springer was treated for pepper spray, then transported to Fostoria City Jail.

Police said the incident involved alcohol, and remains under investigation. More charges may be filed.

If that was the case, her fighting should have stopped once the police showed up. I guess you missed the part where she fought with them AND the innocent cruiser window and door frame. Not to mention the fact that once she bit and stabbed him, and he ran away.....she could have dialed 911 to tell her side of the story. Just sayin'. ”

“ I must say, very intresting story. I wonder if it was a little more to it, given that it's common for a story to be sensationalized by media. Ms. Springer might have a bit of a motherly instinct and felt either a deep fear that her only child was being taken from her or a loathing that her life partner would EVER consider her a bad mother or worse, a threat to her only child. Why would Mr. Springer think his child was in danger? Is there a prior history, or is he distrustful? Something to consider. Never judge a book by its cover. ”

News Briefs Firefighters discover 20 marijuana plants in house
After fighting a house fire early Monday at 815 Howard St., firefighters found 20 marijuana plants in the residence.

"They ran across it and called us," said police Sgt. Justin Hendren with the Hancock County METRICH Drug Enforcement Unit.

Police seized all 20 plants, and Hendren said charges are pending.

High-powered growing lights, fans, and a box filled with dried marijuana were also found in the house, according to a police report.

Investigators said an electrical short started the fire before 3 a.m. Monday.

The blaze caused an estimated $12,000 in damage to the residence, owned by Amanda Crawford. No one was injured, according to the Findlay Fire Department.

Carey announces holiday closing
CAREY -- Carey offices, including administrative, income tax and utilities, electric, wastewater treatment plant, and public works, will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

The curbside recycling program will be held Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 7-9.

Findlay trooper named sergeant
Trooper Jacob L. Fletcher, assigned to the Findlay post of the State Highway Patrol, was promoted to sergeant Wednesday by Patrol Superintendent Col. David Dicken.

With the promotion, Fletcher will stay at the Findlay post and serve as an assistant post commander, according to the patrol.

Fletcher began his patrol career in 2002 after graduating from the 139th Academy class and has been assigned to the Findlay post since.

Owens announces holiday schedule
The Toledo and Findlay campuses of Owens Community College will be closed Saturday through Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

There will be no classes and the college offices will be closed.

Classes will resume and offices will open again on Tuesday.

Holiday changes ad deadlines
The Courier won't be published on Monday, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Because of the holiday, some advertising deadlines have been moved up this week:

Black and white display advertising for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by noon Friday. Display advertising for Wednesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Color display advertising for the Thursday, Sept. 9 newspaper must be placed by Friday.

Classified advertising and City and Country advertising for Saturday's newspaper must be placed by 2 p.m. Friday. Classified ads for Tuesday's newspaper must be placed by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Courier business and advertising offices will close at 3 p.m. Friday for the holiday.
