Basketball coach given new contract

CAREY — The Carey school board approved a 2008-2009 supplemental contract Monday for head varsity boys basketball coach C.J. Kin, a week after failing to take action on the contract.

The board voted 4-1, with board member Jennifer Coppler voting against the contract, after a nearly 90-minute executive session. Kin was called into the executive session several times. About 30 people showed up to the public meeting, including players and parents, to show support.

At its April 14 meeting, the board rejected a supplemental contract list of more than 50 positions by a 3-1 vote with one abstention. After an executive session, the board approved an amended supplemental contract list, which omitted only Kin's name. The board took no action on Kin's contract.

"I've voted against him since he was first selected (as coach for the 2001-2002 school year)," Coppler said after the meeting. "We apologized to C.J. There were concerns and we needed to talk this out."

She said the handling of his contract at the last meeting should have been done differently. Either he should not have been on the main list initially, or his name should have been pulled from the list before the board voted on the other contracts.

"He's a good teacher," she said. "The board approved tenure (for him)."

Concerning his coaching, Coppler said, "I just don't think the communication is there," with parents or players. "Basketball is more than stats. Public opinion means a lot."

Since the last meeting, letters both in favor and opposing Kin have been received by school officials.

Eric Mullholand, president of Carey Education Association which represents district teachers, voiced concern about the way the situation was handled last week, too. He said a person in Kin's situation should be notified about the board's concerns prior to the meeting so that person could attend the session. Mullholand said when the board rejected the entire supplemental contract list initially at the last meeting, nobody knew why.

District residents Mike Dennis and Mike Bakies both voiced support for Kin. Dennis said the issue is not about Kin's coaching ability.

"He does everything he can as a coach," Dennis said. "We shouldn't be here. It's personal."

"You can't let him go," he said. "He has the best interest of the community, teachers and kids."

Mike Bakies agreed with Dennis.

"He's had three good years," Bakies said. "He's building the program. The kids like him. I don't know what you guys are doing."

Board member Brian Will said he voted against including Kin on the list last week because he wanted more information before making a decision on the contract.

For Kin, it is a relief to still have the job.

"I'm very happy to be back," he said via telephone after the meeting. "Myself and the other coaches have started a good program. We've improved every year and next year could be even better yet."

"Myself and my coaches have put in seven years. When we took over the program, it was not the best, but we've progressively gotten better."

The team finished 13-9 this year and advanced to the district tournament. The team finished second in the Midland Athletic League at 8-2. Overall, Kin is 69-87.

"We are at the point that the sky is the limit," he said. "We want to take Carey where we never have been. We have never been to a regional and we have the team to do that. If I would have walked away, it would be like walking away from my players. I couldn't do anything better than fight for the job."
