Plans OK'd for medical building

A medical and sports medicine building will be constructed in the coming months at the northeast corner of Bright Road and Fostoria Avenue.

Ohio Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, 301 W. Wallace St., got City Planning Commission approval Thursday to construct a 22,396-square-foot building at the site.

The new building will house Ohio Orthopaedics' offices, and its therapy space now on Western Avenue. Those two buildings have 12,600 square feet of space.

Ohio Orthopaedics plans to move into the new building by next spring, Business Manager Stanley Phillips said.

The medical practice has six physicians and plans to add two more by the time it moves into the new building. The new building will have more examination rooms.

Separately, the planning commission approved plans for Old Fort Banking Co. to construct an office at the northeast corner of Hancock County Road 236 and Flag City Drive.

The bank's operations, now located at 2113 Tiffin Ave., are expected to move to the new location by November.

The commission also approved plans for Blanchard Valley Health System to build a women's and imaging center at Eastern Woods Subdivision, the location of Birchaven Village.

By a 3-2 vote, the commission recommended City Council deny a request to close part of an alley extending west from Main Street between houses at 838 and 830 S. Main St.

Residents at both addresses want the alley closed to the first intersecting alley. They said motorists speeding through the alley endanger children and pets. They also said the alley is frequented by gangs and those involved in drug-related activity.

Findlay Fire Inspector Jim Holmes said the alley should remain open to allow firefighters access to large garages and barns off the alley. One of the structures is a four-car garage with an apartment upstairs, Holmes said.

Voting to keep the alley open were commission members Thom Hershey, Tom Joseph and Joseph Opperman. In opposition were Mayor Pete Sehnert and Service Director Bruce Hardy.

City Council can override the commission's recommendation with votes from at least six of its nine members.
